Book of the day

After accepting her Dutch boyfriend’s invitation to move from sultry New Orleans, Carolyn finds herself in the land of windmills, wooden shoes and endless gray skies. As she moves away from the remnants of her tragic childhood and America’s obsession with race, she is plunged into the depths of homesickness, depression and a declaration of war on her own hair.
She travels through motherhood and a career change, and her determination is put to the test. On the way to self-discovery, she ends up finding love, soul sisters and the secret to avoiding bad hair days.

In this mid-life memoir, Carolyn writes candidly about how getting the runaround in Spain, being mistaken for a prostitute and losing her passport in Cuba, and dealing with Dutch people on their bikes (among other quirky adventures) have changed her ideas about being a black woman in the world.

Photos of $19.9 million Atlanta mansion on sale

The most expensive home currently on the market in Metro Atlanta is turning into quite the movie star.

The once-$25 million home at 490 West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta was the site of "The Three Stooges" filming last week and is already known for its role in the 2009 film "Zombieland," which filmed extensively in the Atlanta area. The mansion's crazy-cool pool was featured in January on HGTV's "Million Dollar Rooms."

The asking price for the mansion has dropped to $19.9 million, which is still the most expensive home for sale within 50 miles of Atlanta. The home has nine bedrooms and 11 bathrooms with a lot size of 2 to 3 acres. It was built in 2008.

From the website at Sotheby's Atlanta Fine Homes: "Ideal for lavish entertaining, this private resort features seven full kitchens, two gyms, a ballroom, recording studio, hair salon, nail salon, wellness center, cigar room and a theater." It also mentions the enormous "breath-taking courtyard pool" that caught the fancy of HGTV.

The home is considered a single-family home built for entertainment, said listing agent Mark Bhaggan with Sotheby's Atlanta Fine Homes.

Atlanta photographer Andrew Snook said "Stooges" has been filming at the mansion for at least a week. The movie started filming in Cartersvillle during the second week of May. Snook took exclusive early photos of the actors in their "Stooges" get-up. "Three Stooges" is an anticipated remake by the Farrelly Brothers.

In the cult comedy classic "Zombieland," the mansion is the Hollywood home of Bill Murray, who had a surprise cameo in the film. Hookedonhouses.net has some cool movie shots of the mansion juxtaposed against the listings.

Germany’s first black female firefighter….

Black Germans
Fozyatou (18) is the first black female firefighter of Germany. Location: The small town of Binsförth (260 inhabitants) in Hessen, wrote Bild.de

Fozyatou arrived in Hessen with her mother from Togo when she was just a baby. She grew up with the German nursery school, Hesse Green Sauce and the youth fire brigade.
"At the fire department there was always something going on. There were festivals, competitions, camps. Everyone wanted to go."
The first experiences with water gave her so much fun that she wanted to be a real fire-fighter. Fozyatou: "A few weeks ago I finished my basic training successfully. Now I am there when there is a fire somewhere."
Your team at the Volunteer Fire Brigade is Binsförth 20 men and four women strong. On average, there are many ladies here.

This is not true everywhere. The German Fire Service Association is urgently seeking females.
…"As a woman you will not be looked at suspiciously anymore if you want to join fire brigade," said Fozyatou”. But as an African woman you will stand out.

Fozyatou: "Most speak to me about my hair. My mother weaves it according to an old Togolese tradition. It takes 18 hours each time." However: "Getting the thick braids under the helmet, is not so easy. "
Since the flight of mother Fozyatou never returned to their homeland Togo.. "I would love to go there," she says, "but I'm already at home in Germany."
Over two years, Germany's first black firefighter will graduate . What she wants to do it, she knows very well. Fozyatou: "I want to be a policewoman, but after work, in any case I will continue to put out fires."

Recipe of the day..

Easy Shortbread for a Quick Breakfast!
My mom used to make this for us most mornings when i was growing up...So, now i make it for my
children every now and than.. they love it!!

You cannot beat this shortbread recipe for being quick and easy AND inexpensive.
After making it an umteen number of times, I can swear by it. It is is certainly, by far, the easiest and the fastest of all the bread recipes I have ever tried.
And if you prefer, you can make drop biscuits, which are just as nice. It goes really well with guava jam or mango jam and margarine.
Serve with eggs and bacon (or sausage).
________________________________________You will need:
4 Cups all-purpose flour (omit salt and baking
powder if using self-rising flour)
1/2 tsp salt
4 tsp double acting baking powder
1 C margarine
2 large eggs
8 Tbs sugar
1 C Milk
Measure out and combine flour, salt, and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Use a fork to get rid of any lumps present.
Then cut the margarine into the flour (you can use the same fork). To cut, you simply mash the butter into small pieces while mixing in the flour. Cut and mix until the margarine is pea-size and more or less spread throughout the flour.
Beat eggs in a small bowl. Stir sugar in beaten eggs. Then stir milk into egg mixture. Pour the milk mixture over the flour mixture. Stir until just completely mixed (see photo). Do NOT over stir. You do not want your dough to become smooth.

Grease and flour two 8 or 9 inch pans or one
13x9 inch pan. Use a fork to spread dough evenly
in the baking pan(s). Place the bread in oven at
350 degrees and set the timer to 30
minutes (40 minutes for 13x9 inch pan.)
You now have some free time to do something else.
Check your bread when the timer goes off. It should be golden brown and ready in 30 to 35 minutes (or 40 to 45 minuter for larger pan.)
Remove pan from oven. You can leave the bread in the pan and just cut out a piece at a time to eat. Eat with margarine and mango jam....

The First Black That Wanted To Be Sweden’s First Black Prime Minister In 2010

Sweden's Minister of integration Nyamko Ana Sabuni (1969), currently serving as Swedish Minister for Integration and Gender Equality , wants to become Prime Minister of Sweden. But does she really have chance to become the female Barack Obama of Europe, or is it just a political daydream?

The Times wrote about her: Ms Sabuni has never made any secret of her ambition to be Sweden’s first black Prime Minister. Some see parallels between her and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali refugee who renounced Islam, became a Dutch MP and spoke out against the religion, only to relocate in the US after a row about her asylum application.

“We are compared because we are both young, we are both black, we are both politicians,” Ms Sabuni said. “The mission of Ayaan is to reform Islam. My mission is not to reform Islam, my mission is to say that certain traditions are unacceptable
On Zuseeko's official Blog I read a very interesting opinion about Sabuni and her ambition. You can read part of it below.

Despite the recent Increase in "White Power" Groups and outright Violation of Civil Rights in the Scandinavian country. This might come as a surprise to you because you probably think Sweden would be one of the last countries in Europe to have a person of African descent occupy the highest office in the land - Office of the Prime Minister. You're wrong!

It is worth mentioning that despite Sweden's generosity, there is a glass ceiling all across the continent. The odds of a person of "color" becoming Sweden's prime minister anytime soon are slim, but make no mistake - Sabuni might as well be setting the stage. When Barack Obama claimed victory in November 2008, he said his presence on the stage was unlikely and that in no other country on Earth is his story even possible. Could this be true? Is it impossible for a person of African descent to be in the realm of political power in a country in Europe? Read more on Zuseeko's official Blog

An African American Experience in Sweden

“African and African Diasporans have been living in Sweden since the 1300s,” writes Madubuko A. Robinson Diakité in his briefing ‘Afro Diasporians in Sweden, An unfinished History’ (2005). Diakité is a US born Swedish human rights lawyer and academic who has lived in Sweden since 1968.

His briefing is about Sweden’s “Blue men” during slavery, the African-American experience from the 1960s until today, and about the new arrived African immigrants in Sweden. In the intro he writes: “It's the result of many personal interviews and oral histories I have listened to with people here since my arrival in 1968.”

See snippets of the document below and download the pdf-documenthere.

M. A. Robinson Diakité is also Publisher and Managing Editor of a English University magazine entitled The Lundiun . A must read for everyone who is interested in Sweden.

Snippets of Afro Diasporians in Sweden

Post World War II arrivals

During 1950s and 60s, most African Americans who came to reside did so to join Family members (wives, husbands), or in the promotion of their arts. Also Jazz musicians, choreographers and others came during that time and made a lasting contribution to the development of post-ware Swedish artist, dancers and singers.

Bad Icons

It has been estimated that during the Vietnam era, between 600 and 800 US deserters came to Sweden, and appromatitely 15% of these were African American. [Unfortunately some of them became bad icons, because they were involveld in criminal activities.]

When president Jimmy Carter's Amnesty was adopted most of deseters returned home, Today, there are only a few (less than 20) African American military deserters living in Sweden. to read more go here

Black People In Russia

I stumbled upon the the blog of J. B. Ross, Black Girl in Russia, and I thought it would be the right moment to post some information on Russia . So, a short news round-up.

Some of the comments on the interview are unfortunatly very negative. She is called loud and boisterous. But she responded.
"As I read the comments above you are absolutely right. That is how my article sounds exactly when it really isn't the case. I am alone 90% of the time, speaking in Russian most of the time. And most of the negative incidences happen at those times. Young children pointing and saying cherni(negative word), young adults laughing and calling out "nigger". Men trying to grab me, and the list goes on. I think my way of coping with that is what you see in the article. The few times I am with my English speaking friends I get a sense of enjoyment or reprieve if you will from the "fitting in" as you call it that doesn't quite work out that well.

I study blacks living in Russia. That's why I'm here and most of them say they stay inside and keep to themselves. Is that what I'm supposed to do to prevent these incidences? I think not. And yes in proportion to my afro the cameras do come out more. And once again I am alone most of the time when these problems happen. to read more go here

10 Dangerous Toothpaste Ingredients

Toothpaste even though (in some form or another) has been around as long as the Ancient Greeks have, the formula (as we know it) did not become popular until World War I. As soon as companies began manufacturing toothpaste, people began to purchase the magical concoction - guaranteed to produce glistening teeth! White teeth were all the rage after World War I had ended, and toothpaste quickly became a product that most people simply couldn't live without.

Toothpaste is one item that nearly everyone uses today, but what makes this concoction so special? Whether you brush your teeth once per day or three times per day, chances are that you've never taken the time to read that ingredient list. Some believe that the ingredients contained in a standard package of toothpaste are essential - others believe that water may be just as effective. In the end, there's a good reason why most toothpaste packages warn: "Do Not Ingest!"

10 formaldehyde
That same ingredient that coroners can't live without can be found inside of your toothpaste tube. Formaldehyde kills all of those small bacteria that climb onto your teeth after eating or sleeping. If a large amount of formaldehyde is accidentally ingested, the result could be fatal. Severe formaldehyde ingestion results in jaundice, kidney damage, liver damage, and death.

9 detergent

Foam, suds, activation! What would toothpaste be without that satisfying soapy feeling? Manufacturers use regular detergent in order to appease the masses that prefer bubbly toothpaste. While bubbles may be fun, be careful if you accidentally ingest a large amount of this stuff - swallowing detergent can cause digestive tract burning.

8 seaweed

Stretchy and slimy, seaweed holds that paste together. Without this green stuff, toothpaste would simply fall apart! The good news is that seaweed isn't toxic. Infact, seaweed has a number of nutritional benefits, though hitting the sushi bar is a better way of gaining those benefits.
