Liberians Turn Out To Vote Despite Deadly Clashes…

Turnout in Liberia's presidential run-off appears low following an opposition boycott over fraud claims and deadly clashes on Monday.

Opposition candidate Winston Tubman said he was pulling out of the vote, but the election commission urged Liberians to cast their ballots.

Nobel Peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, is now the only candidate.

A BBC reporter says her re-election will be tainted unless turnout is high.

The BBC's Jonathan Paye-Layleh in central Monrovia says at the polling station where he was when voting began, just eight people were waiting to cast their ballots, compared to hundreds last month.

Our reporter says he has received similar reports from other parts of Liberia, including the second city, Buchanan.

It seems many people felt it was pointless to vote because Mrs Sirleaf was assured of victory, our correspondent says.go here

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, called Israeli PM Netanyahu 'liar'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar" in remarks to US President Barack Obama overheard by journalists.

"I can't stand him any more, he's a liar," Mr Sarkozy said in French.

"You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day," Mr Obama replied.

The exchange at the G20 summit was quoted by a French website, Arret sur Images, and confirmed by other media.

The remarks - during a private conversation - were overheard by a few journalists last week but were not initially reported, the BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris says.

Journalists at the bilateral press conference had been handed translation boxes but had been told not to plug in their headphones until the backroom conversation had finished. But those who did heard the revealing comments.

For several days there was media silence in France about the exchange - a decision had been taken not to embarrass the French president, our correspondent says.

A correspondent for Le Monde newspaper referred to the conversation without the quotes.

But Israeli newspapers have reported it in full.

It is said Mr Obama was taking Mr Sarkozy to task for voting in favour of the Palestinian bid for full membership of the UN cultural organisation, Unesco, a bid that was approved despite American opposition.

The remarks indicate a breakdown of trust with the Israeli leader which could have wider implications for the Middle East peace process, our correspondent says.

Nigerdock is owned by the people of Nigeria but managed by a British group.

UN launches competition to design memorial to victims of slavery..

30 September 2011 – The committee tasked with building a permanent memorial at the United Nations to honour the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade today launched a global competition for the design of the structure to remind the world that millions of Africans were violently removed from their homelands, abused and robbed of their dignity.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will administer the design competition, Ambassador Raymond Wolfe of Jamaica, the chair of the Permanent Memorial Committee on Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, told a news conference at UN Headquarters. go here

Ghana restaurant under investigation, "whites only" comment denied..CHEAP JOKE!!!

The Italian manager of a restaurant in Ghana under investigation for allegedly operating a "whites only" policy has told the BBC it was a misunderstanding.

Marco Ranaldi said he made "a joke" about the racial profile of members of the Atlantic Lobsters and Dolphins.

A Ghanaian woman started an online protest after visiting the restaurant a week ago and allegedly being told that it was "only for white people".

Meanwhile, tourism authorities closed it on Tuesday as it was not licensed.

Police are still investigating the allegations of racism.

The BBC's Samuel Bartels in the capital, Accra, says Elizabeth Okoro's campaign on the social media site Facebook has generated a huge uproar in the country.

Ms Okoro, 26, said she visited the restaurant in the capital, Accra, with some colleagues a week ago and was shocked to hear about the membership rules for the establishment. go here

28 years old Zambian model Mofya Chisenga passes away during childbirth

The popular 28yr old Zambian model, beauty queen and entrepreneur died during childbirth last weekend, Friday Oct 14, 2011. The model had been very sick while pregnant. Doctors said she had fluid in her lungs. They managed to deliver her baby but couldn't save her.

Mofya represented Zambia at Tourism Queen International Pageant 2005 in China and the Miss Universe in Los Angeles California.

Experts warn that drinking the recommended eight glasses of water a day could actually be harmful to a person's health.

Glasgow-based GP Margaret McCartney says benefits of drinking water are often exaggerated by
organisations with a vested interest, such as bottled water brands. Writing in the British Medical Journal she also claims that drinking when not thirsty can impair concentration.

A report claims that the benefits of drinking copious amounts of water are quite simply myths, suggesting there is no evidence behind claims that water prevents multiple health problems.

According to Dr McCartney, consumption of excessive amounts of water can in fact lead to loss of sleep and even cause kidney damage instead of preventing it.

Professor Stanley Goldfarb, a metabolism expert from the University of Pennsylvania also claims there is no evidence to suggest that water suppresses appetite.

'If children drank more water rather than getting extra calories from soda, that's good - but there is no evidence that drinking water before meals reduces appetite,' he says.

Around 2.06 billion litres of water was consumed in Britain last year in comparison to just 1.42billion litres in 2000.
